History of The Church of the Atonement
In 1881 Bishop Watterson visted the new coal mines in Corning, Ohio at the request of Thomas Corcoran and John Monahan. He immediately decided to open a parish there the next year and assigned Fr. O`Boylan as the first pastor.
There was a temporary church built dedicated to St. Malachy and by that same year there were more and more Catholic miners pouring into the area.
In Chapel Hill, nearby, there was a small church called St. Francis of Assisi that was also growing and the two communities together decided to build a larger church the community dedicated to St. Bernard in 1884. The first church was a plain wood frame building which was later replaced in 1915 with the gothic design church that stands there today.
